Adding Data to Core
Now that the platform is installed, configured, and you have an admin account, this guide shows how to load your own geodata into stac-gis Core through the admin panel:
- Raster data - import existing STAC Collections (one collection, or an entire catalog) into Raster Collections.
- Vector data - ingest vector sources (e.g. PMTiles) by URL into Vector Datasets.
Everything is done from the browser - no CLI required.
⚠️ These are admin-only features. You must be signed in with a user whose
roleisadmin(see Creating an Admin User).
Opening the admin panel
-
Open the stac-gis app in your browser (dev: http://localhost:3000) and sign in with your admin account.
-
Click the profile (avatar) icon in the top-right corner of the header.
-
In the dropdown that appears, choose Admin.
ℹ️ The Admin entry is only shown for users with the
adminrole. Regular users will not see it in the dropdown.Clicking it opens the admin dashboard (the
/adminarea), which has a sidebar of management pages:Sidebar item URL Purpose Overview /admin/overviewSystem health & status Users /admin/usersManage users & roles Raster Collections /admin/collectionsImport & manage raster (STAC) collections Vector Datasets /admin/vectorsIngest & manage vector sources Knowledge Base /admin/knowledgeManage the AI knowledge base Analytics /admin/analyticsUsage analytics Settings /admin/settingsProfile & system settings
💡 You can also go straight to http://localhost:3000/admin in the address bar.
Raster data - import a STAC Collection or Catalog
Use the Raster Collections page to pull raster data in from any STAC API. The platform reads the STAC metadata, registers the collection(s), and - if you ask it to - imports every linked item (raster asset) as well.
1. Go to Raster Collections
From the admin sidebar, click Raster Collections (http://localhost:3000/admin/collections).
2. Start an import
Click the Import STAC button in the top-right action bar. (On an empty instance the button reads "Import Your First STAC". Both open the Import STAC Collection form.)
3. Fill in the form
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| STAC URL (required) | The URL of a STAC Collection, or the root of a STAC API / catalog - see the two modes below. |
| Import Items | Toggle (on by default). When on, every item/raster linked to the collection(s) is imported too. |
| Import as Catalog | Toggle (off by default). When on, the URL is treated as a STAC API root and all collections under it are imported. The submit button changes from Import Collection to Import Catalog. |
Two ways to point the STAC URL
-
A single collection - paste the full collection URL and leave Import as Catalog off, then click Import Collection:
https://dev-stac-api.opengeohub.org/v1/collections/clm_air.temp_ecodatacube -
A whole catalog - paste the STAC API root and turn Import as Catalog on, then click Import Catalog:
https://dev-stac-api.opengeohub.org/v1
ℹ️ The URLs above are a public STAC API you can use to test when your own Catalog instance is not running yet. In normal use, point the STAC URL at whichever STAC API you actually want to import from.
4. Verify
After a successful import you'll see a confirmation toast
(Successfully imported collection: … or Successfully imported N collections from catalog) and the new collection appear in the grid/list. Open a
collection to see its imported rasters.
You can later re-sync a collection with its Refresh action to pick up new or updated items from the source STAC API.
API equivalent (optional)
The admin UI calls:
curl -X POST "http://localhost:8000/api/v1/rasters/collections/import-stac" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer <ACCESS_TOKEN>" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"stac_url": "https://dev-stac-api.opengeohub.org/v1/collections/clm_air.temp_ecodatacube",
"import_items": true,
"is_catalog": false
}'
Set "is_catalog": true (and use the API root as stac_url) to import an
entire catalog in one call.
Vector data - ingest from URL (PMTiles)
Use the Vector Datasets page to add vector sources by URL. For PMTiles you only need to provide the PMTiles URL - stac-gis reads the metadata over HTTP (Range requests) and registers the source.
1. Go to Vector Datasets
From the admin sidebar, click Vector Datasets (http://localhost:3000/admin/vectors).
2. Start a URL ingest
Click the Ingest URL button in the top-right action bar (there's also an Upload File button for local vector files). This opens the Ingest Vector from URL dialog.
3. Fill in the form
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Source URL (required) | The URL of the vector source, e.g. a .pmtiles file. |
| Format | Source format - PMTiles (default), GeoJSON, or FlatGeobuf. |
| Name (English required) + Description | Display metadata. You can add extra languages under Translations. |
| Tags | Optional, comma-separated tags (e.g. land-use, forest). |
For a PMTiles source, keep the format as PMTiles, paste the PMTiles URL into Source URL, give it a name, and click Ingest:
https://example.com/data.pmtiles
You'll see a "Vector URL ingest started." confirmation and the new vector dataset appear in the list.
API equivalent (optional)
curl -X POST "http://localhost:8000/api/v1/vectors/ingest-url" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer <ACCESS_TOKEN>" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"source_url": "https://example.com/data.pmtiles",
"format": "pmtiles",
"name": "My Vector Layer",
"tags": ["land-use"]
}'
